Why we exist
We are a coffee shop with an ulterior motive.
Beyond Boundaries sells coffee, tea and hot chocolate. We are also the trading arm of 13 Not Out, a registered charity that keeps girls in school in Uganda. The drinks are the means. The schooling is the point.
It started with cricket coaching
A group of volunteers went out to Uganda to coach cricket. Working alongside local coaches, they found no shortage of talent on the pitch. What they found off it was harder to watch. Girls who could play, and who wanted to learn, were leaving school early because their families could not carry the cost.
Dropping out at thirteen is common enough that it barely registers as news. It ends most of what follows. The charity took its name from the idea that thirteen should be a score you carry on from, not the point at which someone walks off.
What the charity actually does
13 Not Out works with local cricket academies across Uganda to find girls at risk of leaving education, then sponsors them through it. School fees come first. Beyond that it covers the things that quietly decide whether a girl keeps turning up: uniform, books, materials, and period products.
Cricket is not decoration. It is how the programme reaches girls in the first place, and it teaches the parts that a classroom does not. Alongside the sponsorship there is mentoring, and the girls who come through the programme go on to mentor the intake behind them.
Where the coffee comes in
Charities that depend entirely on donations spend a great deal of energy asking. A trading arm is steadier. You were going to buy coffee this month regardless. Bought here, 100% of the profit is donated to the charity instead of going to a shareholder.
The coffee has to be worth buying on its own terms, or the argument collapses. Ours is roasted to order and sold as whole bean or ground to your brewing method. The teas are proper leaf and bag teas, in club quantities as well as domestic ones. If it were not good, telling you about Uganda would not save it.
Who we are
Beyond Boundaries trades in support of 13 Not Out, registered charity 1216500. The charity works through local cricket academies in Uganda, currently Keere Cricket Academy, Angels Academy and Pi Anyim Academy. Our coffee, tea and chocolate is roasted and blended by Limini Coffee.
